What is TESOL?

 

The term TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language, is used to describe this type of teaching because not everyone who wants to learn the language sees it as foreign. It is preferred to TEFL, teaching English as a foreign language, because many English-speaking countries have citizens for whom English is a second or third language. The idea of English being a foreign language is also problematic in countries like India and Nigeria, which use English in their legal and administrative systems, but where it is not the first language of the general population.
